Fabio Luisi has served as principal conductor of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra since 2011, serving under James Levine, and considered by many to be Levine's likely successor. Luisi has accepted the post of conductor of the Danish National Symphony beginning in 2017, and will be leaving the MET at the end of the 2016/17 season.
Luisi is also Music Director of the Zurich Opera. It was last year that we had a spate of contentious negotiations between orchestras and their musicians. Some orchestras experienced lockouts. Some came very close, but reached agreements before their seasons began.
One of the orchestras that made news last year was the Atlanta Symphony, and it seems that once again things are heating up there as the contract deadline approaches. One thing I noticed about Atlanta was the large number of people working in the central office--as I recall, there were more people working in administration than there were in the orchestra. I understand the need for a strong corporate office, but I have a hard time wrapping my hear around the notion that orchestras need that many people in administrative roles. At any rate, Robert Spano and Donald Runnicles have gone public with their thoughts on the matter. You can read a letter from them here. |
