Protests over the police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri of Michael Brown spilled into the concert hall Saturday night as protestors interrupted the St. Louis Symphony concert. The orchestra was taking a break in their performance of the Brahms Requiem, and a number of individuals in the audience stood up and sang their "Requiem for Mike Brown".
After singing for about 90 seconds the protestors left on their own. The Washington Post reported on the protest here. The fix is in at one competition--so says pianist and juror Pascal Roge. He gave up his position as a judge at the Monza Concours Rina Sala Gallo after the semi-finals, and is speaking out about the problems there. Norman Lebrecht has a complete statement from Roge posted here. First, music director Riccardo Muti quit. Now management is firing the whole company--or at least the chorus and orchestra. Their plan is to outsource the musicians.
Here's the story. Bloomberg is reporting that the Moody's may downgrade the MET due to weak financial performance.
The story is here. As reported by Norman Lebrecht, the Islamic ruling party in Turkey is cracking down on western performing arts. A new dress code has been imposed which states: ‘Athletic wear, sleeveless cotton, shorts, tights, stretch jeans, sandals, slippers, spike-heeled shoes, evening dresses and so on, shall not be worn on the premises.’
The headline of the original article (in Turkish) translates as: "Tights for Ballet Dancers Forbidden!" |
