The 2015 Grammy nominees have been named. Rather than trying to list the classical nominees here, I'll simply give you a link to the official site.

You can read more about the study that reaches these conclusions here. Composer Lisa Bielawa has embarked on a new project--an opera composed for episodic broadcast online.
It's entitled Vireo: The Spiritual Biography of a Witch's Accuser. The pilot episode will be filmed in February for broadcast in the spring. Starring in the title role of Vireo will be 16 year old soprano Rowen Sabala. Vireo: The Spiritual Biography of a Witch’s Accuser is an opera that considers the nature and uses of female hysteria through time, as witch-hunters, early psychiatrists, and modern artists variously define the condition. Based on composer Bielawa’s own research at Yale as a Literature major, then freely adapted and re-imagined by librettist Erik Ehn, Vireo is a composite history of the way in which teenage-girl visionaries’ writings and rantings have been manipulated, incorporated, and interpreted by the communities of men surrounding them throughout history, from the European Dark Ages, to Salem Massachusettes, 19th-century France, the Surrealists in Paris, and contemporary performance art. Featuring arias for dying cows, infatuated students, disembodied ageless women, and a mysterious twin of Vireo herself, the opera provides a thoughtful, and sometimes humorous look at the universal issues of gender identity, perception, and reality. It will be released through a partnership with KCETLink. At one time, Kyung Wha Chung was considered one of the great violinists on the music scene--and then she suffered an injury which took her out of the spotlight and away from music for a decade.
She has just returned to the stage for a performance at Royal Albert Hall. The buildup to the concert had people anticipating great things. If you've been off the stage for 10 years and then return with expectations high--well, if it were me, I'd be pretty nervous. According to a review in The Guardian, Erica Jeal indicates the evening was a little tense, but Chung delivered in the end. You can read her review here. At least across the pond...you never know what they might be playing!
Read it here. That's big trouble in Dallas--specifically the Dallas Symphony.
Conductor Jaap von Zweeden has been working with the orchestra since 2008, and by his own admission is a taskmaster. But his authoritarian style isn't going over well with the musicians. Reports are surfacing that he has demoted or fired people with no notice, and that von Zweeden likes to operate by instilling fear in his players. The Dallas Morning News has the full story here. Having been in public radio for some time, when I first read the news about Colorado Public Radio dropping the Colorado Symphony broadcasts, I thought there would be more to the story. The Denver Post enlightened me quite a bit with this article.
Suffice it to say that its usually a mistake when a non-profit arts organization brings in management with little to no experience in non-profits, or the work the organization does I'm referring to the orchestra in this case). Colorado Public Radio and the Colorado Symphony are at odds over terms relevant to CPR's broadcasts of the orchestra--so much so that the broadcasts have been terminated.
I'll reserve comment as I don't know all the details, but there are more details at the Colorado Public Radio web site. You can read more here. |
