After a recent emergency fundraising campaign which proved to be successful, the National Philharmonic will open its new season on September 21-22, teaming up with the Eroica Trio for a performance of Beethoven's Triple Concerto.
More information can be found here. Musical America is reporting that pianist Murray Perahia has cancelled his scheduled concert dates through September 6. The cancellations are reportedly due to ill health. The health issues is unspecified. Perahia cancelled concert earlier this year also for health reasons. He hasn't performed publicly in 2019. No further information is available at this time. Public broadcaster KCUR in Kansas City has announced plans to bring classical music to the market 24 hours a day.
They are purchasing a 7,000 watt station that is currently silent from William Jewel College. Recently the station had been leased to a Christian broadcast operation. The last full-time classical station left the KC airwaves about 2 decades ago. More details can be found here. You may remember that the Metropolitan Opera fired longtime conductor James Levine over misconduct allegations in 2018 after an investigation found that the allegations had merit. Levine responded with a lawsuit claiming breach of contract and defamation. The MET countersued.
That case was settled out of court last week. Details of the settlement are undisclosed. The New York Times writes about it here. (AP photo) Placido Domingo is the most recent high profile musician to face allegations of sexual abuse. Nine women have come forward to accuse Domingo of offering jobs to singers and withholding them if they refused his advances, and more. AP has a detailed article on the subject here. This is in the wake of recent allegations that have surfaced regarding the Curtis Institute of Music. Former Curtis student and well-known violinist Lara St. John brought long rumored allegations against her former teacher to light. A number of other former students have related similar experiences, but St. John is the most visible. You can read more here. Renee Fleming credits the Aspen Festival with an important role in her development as an opera singer. She is now going back to Aspen to help redesign the Festival's summer opera program, working along with Patrick Summers, music director of the Houston Grand Opera.
The goal is to better prepare young singers for today's opera world. The New York Times writes about it here. We wrote recently about the National Philharmonic's urgent campaign to raise $150,000. That campaign was successful--actually raising about $200,000. As a result, the orchestra will be able to return to Strathmore for the 2019/2020 season. The orchestra had been in danger of closing.
More on their current situation can be found here. With no resolution in sight to the Baltimore Symphony's problems, musicians are taking it upon themselves to being music to the people. Some of the musicians have been giving concerts at the subway's Metro Station.
