Classical Music on New Hampshire Public Radio

6/30/2014

Current (a publication for those in public media) is reporting that New Hampshire Public Radio is taking over WCNH, a small classical station in Concord.  To my knowledge, WCNH is the only classical outlet on a primary frequency in the state, though NHPR has been airing their content on HD.

I met the then GM of WCNH several years ago at an AMPPR conference.  The license for the station was sought as a response to NHPR's decision to go all-talk, leaving New Hampshire without a classical station.

I hope the decision to sell to NHPR will prove to be a positive.  Perhaps they will be able to provide resources that the current owners haven't been able to, so as to keep classical music on the public airwaves in the state.

Now, There's a Diverse Music Festival

It's summer, of course, and time for all the various music festivals around the country.  One of the more interesting that has come across my desk recently is the Crested Butte Music Festival in Colorado, which gets underway today.

There will be plenty of classical music, to be sure.  The Boston Brass are there--and by the way, they'll be presenting a patriotic concert on July 4.  Benjamin Wallfisch is at the festival to lead the Festival Symphony Orchestra.  He'll be presenting a talk, "Everything you Wanted to Know About Tchaikovsky but Were Afraid to Ask" on the 7th, and will lead the orchestra in a Russian program on July 10.  Guest pianist Alexander Schimpf will solo with the orchestra.  There's also a track called "Opera in Paradise", with 14 performances, master classes, free talks and more.

In addition to the classical music, though, there are two other tracks: Bluegrass in Paradise, and Gypsy Jazz in Paradise.  Both will feature prominent performers, and this should provide an interesting contrast to the straight classical music (which I highly favor, of course--but I'm not averse to a little variety on occasion).

Should music festivals be more diverse, or should they focus primarily on one genre?  I'm open to comments.

When you think of important violin concertos, probably those of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms and others from the 19th century come to mind.  But there were a number of concertos of significance composed in the 20th century.  Violinist Gil Shaham has chosen to feature four of them on his concert tours this season.

Gil will be playing the Britten Violin Concerto thie summer with the Carnegie Hall National Youth Orchestra of the USA on their inaugural tour.  In addition to appearing at Carnegie Hall, they'll be performing at Tanglewood (July 24), Grant Park (July 28), and Disney Hall in LA (Aug. 4).

In addition this summer, Gil will be playing the Bartok 2nd, the Barber, and the Prokofiev 2nd violin concertos with various orchestras around the country.
